U.S. officials target U.S. ambassador with smear campaign, retaliation for positive Open Skies Treaty testimony.
I keep a very close eye on media regarding the Open Skies Treaty, watching for which outlets get “scoops” that spread disinformation, which helps figure out which outlets are tight with those who are trying to slander, and remove the United States from the Open Skies Treaty. It doesn’t take long to figure out the Washington Free Beacon’s conservative bias, but much more nuanced are the leaks they get from a variety of Washington insiders. It is not impossible to deduce, from the disinformation spread about the Open Skies Treaty, who is trying to get rid of it. It isn’t Trump behind the campaign to kill the Open Skies Treaty. Trump couldn’t care less.
I wouldn’t normally ask that you read something elsewhere, but please do, with a critical eye, and follow my analysis after you do so — or just follow my quotes. I think reading the original piece is worth your while, despite several misleading statements.
Trump Admin Infighting Over Open Skies Treaty Infuriates GOP Hawks
Adam Kredo - Senior Trump administration officials are working behind the scenes to thwart President Donald Trump's…
What this article shamelessly points out is a group of United States Government officials, both current and past, are targeting a smear campaign at the United States Ambassador to the OSCE, James Gilmore, due to his support of the Open Skies Treaty. You read that right, “officials” told the Washington Free Beacon they didn’t want their names published, but sure did want to paint the current American ambassador to the OSCE as a disloyal traitor to Donald Trump, and that he’s a Republican who has gone-soft.
• Ambassador Jim Gilmore, a onetime Trump critic
• Some point to Gilmore’s early opposition to Trump as a possible motivation for his current position.
• Gilmore — then a challenger for the Republican presidential nomination — wrote in a since-deleted tweet that “Trump’s fascist talk drives all minorities from GOP.”
• “Gilmore appears to be a case study in the failure of the [government hiring] process earlier in the administration,” said one former U.S. official
• “It’s clear he has nothing but contempt for the president — how does he get away with calling President Trump a ‘racist’? And he appears to be going out of his way to undermine administration policy.”
• A senior Republican national security official expressed a similar view, describing Gilmore’s position as “essentially a rebellion against the president’s stated position.”
• (Gilmore’s) comments appeared to contradict those of officials such as Esper (NB: They were “contradictory” because they were true, think about that -ed)
If you pay attention to the news, you’re a little familiar with the people who are trying to kill American participation in the Open Skies Treaty, their identities and social circles are not anonymous. I could be wrong, but I am pretty certain that of the very small number of people who have been campaigning against the treaty for years, Sen Tom Cotton (R-AR), former official John Bolton, and former official (and former HASC staffer) Tim Morrison (appointed by John Bolton, buds with Cotton) have all leaked information to the press to disparage the Open Skies Treaty before, and any of them could be behind some of these disparaging comments too — but those are just the famous snakes of the American government who are trying with all their might to kill the Open Skies Treaty. The NSC still has ideologues who believe American domination is the only way forward; it doesn’t matter that Bolton is gone, his influence remains — which, incidentally, is what Fred @ Slate wrote back in October 2019.
I’m not *suggesting* there is a powerful group of people trying to run anyone out of town who dares question their plan to kill the Open Skies Treaty; I’m *telling you* that’s exactly what’s going on — this article says so; it’s very strongly worded evidence that there is a faction of the American government working against the treaty, and they’re powerful enough to come together and influence the Washington Free Beacon to publish a hit piece against a sitting American ambassador, because he’s speaking out, and saying that the Open Skies Treaty is actually a good thing.
Read it forwards, then read it backwards; it isn’t partisan for me to point out it’s clearly a hit-piece from those who want to tear down the Open Skies Treaty, despite our assurances time and time again before Congress, The Senate, and the news, that there is some sort of assessment being done about the risks to American security. I put to you there is no evidence of any such thing going on. I believe the United States National Security Council is going to try to pull the United States out of the Open Skies treaty no matter what. Sen Tom Cotton (R-AR) knows he’s not going to get a chance anytime soon to try shenanigans again, and he’s been working on this for over half a decade. They cannot afford delays introduced by someone who knows what they’re doing, and can speak in favour of the treaty with certainty and passion using his reputation. Oh, wait, you don’t know the punchline yet.
You see, Ambassador Gilmore was the Chair of the Open Skies Consultative Commission last year; here he is posing with a German officer at the plenary where they decided the 2020 flight quotas. Can you think of anyone in the Trump administration with more experience on the Open Skies Treaty than the guy who was the CHAIR of the international commission that runs it? It would be really hard for some random staffer or NSC official to contradict him, wouldn’t it?
“It’s clear he has nothing but contempt for the president (..) he appears to be going out of his way to undermine administration policy.” — “former American government official”
The faction of the Republicans who are trying to get the Americans out of the Open Skies Treaty have hit a snag. One of their own, another Republican, is not against the treaty, and he clearly has a better reputation than they do on the topic. So what do they do? They call up the Washington Free Beacon and tell them a salacious story about what a snake Amb Gilmore is, and how he’s not really loyal to the President.
Gilmore was on the board of the NRA. Gilmore was the 68th Governor of Virginia, a Republican Governor. Gilmore was the Chair of the Republican National Committee! As the Washington Free Beacon article makes perfectly clear, this is about Gilmore’s opposition to a group of officials’ policy to get rid of the Open Skies Treaty, not Trump’s policy, he didn’t think of it, I assure you. Gilmore, by provoking the faction of Republicans against the treaty into publishing a hit piece about him, have roughly identified who some of these officials are who are coming after him, and I bet he knows them by name. The faction of the Republican Party who are trying to kill the Open Skies Treaty are well known, and will not stop. Stay sharp.
